Deep Dive: MINISFORUM MS795S7 – A Powerhouse for Under $1100

A few weeks ago, we covered the MS795S7 in our three-way business desktop shootout. Today, we’re taking a deeper dive into this intriguing machine to examine both its strengths and weaknesses.

The Value Proposition

One of the standout features of the MS795S7 is its price-to-performance ratio. The unit is currently on sale with a $116 discount, bringing the regular price of $569.90 down significantly. For our build, we added:

The total hardware cost came to just under $950. Adding a Windows 11 Pro Key for $160 before tax brought the fully functional machine to just over $1100.

Performance and Versatility

Configured this way, the MS795S7 is an incredibly capable machine. It’s powerful enough to handle almost any workload:

  • Gaming: AAA titles at 1440p are well within reach.

  • Media Editing: Handles video and photo editing effortlessly.

  • STEM Applications: Ideal for CAD, GIS, and heavy science workloads.

  • Compact Workstation: At only 7 liters, it’s perfect for users with limited space.

For a single compact system that needs to do it all, this is an excellent choice. The only scenario where it might not be ideal is in highly space-constrained environments—such as an RV or ultra-portable setup—where a smaller unit like the UM690 or NAB9 may be preferable.

Limitations and Concerns

While the small form factor is an advantage in terms of space-saving, it also presents some serious limitations when it comes to upgrades. The SFF version of the RTX 4060 is the absolute maximum GPU that can fit inside the case. Given early reports of higher power consumption in the RTX 5060 series, future upgrades may not be possible within this chassis.

Wireless Card Installation – A Frustrating Experience

Installing the card and bracket in this space is nearly impossible. Even after removing the motherboard from the case

Installing a wireless card required a complete disassembly of the machine, including removing the motherboard from the case, as well as detaching the fan and shroud from the heatsink assembly.

This was a total nightmare. Even after the card was installed, it refused to start, displaying the unhelpful Code 10 error. We strongly suggest using a wired Ethernet connection or, if necessary, a USB wireless adapter instead.

Case Design Flaws

We found several frustrating aspects of the case design:

  • Ventilation is just adequate when using an RTX 4060, but the decision to have the card pull air from the small space underneath the case—where it is raised by only four small rubber feet—is questionable.

  • A more logical design choice would have been placing the power supply in the bottom space, allowing the GPU to breathe freely from the top.

  • While the device can be used in a horizontal orientation, if placed with the Minisforum logo facing upright, the large ventilation mesh ends up facing downward, restricting airflow.

Vent lets in air in this orientation but the logo is now upside down.

BIOS and Support Concerns

So far, no BIOS updates have been released since version 1.0 (dated 9/26/24), which suggests there may never be any additional firmware updates unless a catastrophic issue arises (and even then, support is uncertain).

Final Verdict

The MS795S7 delivers great value, but support and attention to detail prevent us from giving a strong recommendation. While it resembles commonly used office machines like the SFF Dell Latitude or HP ProDesk, the lack of flexibility and questionable support make it a tough sell.

We are, of course, biased—but we feel that the SeraphimGate Systems Evo Series Desktop offers significantly better value. At $810 fully assembled, including a genuine copy of Windows 11 Pro, it not only provides a better price point but also uses a CoolerMaster case that allows for full-size GPUs, 2.5-inch SATA disk expansion, and superior airflow.

Benchmark Results

See our previouse tests for more details on over all performance but with the RTX 4060 installed we saw the following in our testing.

  • 3DMark Steel Nomad Light: 10,418

  • 3DMark Night Raid: Over 70,000

While these are solid results, the overall limitations and upgrade constraints make it a tough recommendation for long-term use compared to more flexible options in the same price range.
