Tiny Powerhouses for Your Home Lab and Media Center

In an era where energy efficiency and space conservation are increasingly important, the GMKTec NucBox G3 and G5 stand out as versatile mini PCs that pack impressive capabilities into remarkably compact forms at extremely affordable prices. We are often seeing the G5 at less than $140 while the G5 is usually around $150. Whether you're looking to set up a remote access solution, build a media server, or experiment with virtualization, these diminutive devices offer compelling options for both enthusiasts and professionals.

Meet the NucBox Family

NucBox G3: The Energy-Efficient Performer ($145 as tested)

We are deploying these boxes as quorum nodes in our Proxmox clusters with our higher end Minisform NAB9 doing the heavy lifting, as they provide tremendous value running light workloads like Pi Hole and other light server apps while also providing a third vote in the cluster ensuring we don't run in to any split brain scenarios. See last weeks post for more information on this new lab setup. While the green case with the subtle checkerboard finish on the top isn't the most convention aesthetic we have to admit that the presentation is quite pleasant. The build quality is also solid with minimal flex and and squeaking from the plastic chassis. The upgradeable ram via DDR4 Sodimm is also a plus, but for our money the killer feature is the 2.5Gbit networking which is incredible at this price.

The NucBox G3 brings impressive specifications in a compact 115mm x 108mm x 44mm package:

Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake-N100 processor (4-core, 4-thread, up to 3.4 GHz)

Intel UHD Graphics (750MHz)

8GB DDR4 RAM at 3200 MT/s (expandable to 32GB)

256GB M.2 SATA SSD (expandable to 2TB)

Dual HDMI ports supporting 4K@60Hz

Four USB 3.2 ports

2.5G Ethernet port

WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2

3.5mm headphone jack

Windows 11 Pro pre-installed

NucBox G5: Smaller and Even More Power

These tiny devices have found a place in our hearts and in our Amazon shopping cart because they provide and fantastic experience for our clients who have employees working from home who need remote access but don't want a bulky desktop taking up valuable space. We have also tested these units as micro servers and the N97 processor handles light workloads with no issues. For a few dollars more than the larger G3 the G5 seems like the obvious choice but there are a few things to consider first. Because of the physically smaller size the m.2 slot is only capable of accommodating smaller 2242 size module which limits your options. Additionally the RAM is soldered to the motherboard and not upgradable. Finally, we would love to see the G5 leave behind the gigabit Ethernet for high speeds like the G3.

Intel 12th Gen Alder Lake-N97 processor (4-core, 4-thread, up to 3.6 GHz)

Enhanced Intel UHD Graphics (1.2 GHz)
